Brean Leisure Park

Brean Leisure Park is an amusement park in the coastal resort of Brean, near Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, England. It covers an area of 10 acres (4.0 ha).^[2]

Open from March to October every year, the leisure park has also been a concert venue for artists such as DJ Casper,^[3] Peter Andre,^[4] Jason Donovan and The Wurzels. Sky have filmed an episode of Brainiac: Science Abuse entitled "Funfair Physics" at the park. An episode of BBC TV series Casualty was also filmed there in 2007. And an episode of CBBC TV series The Sparticle Mystery was filmed of the titled of the episode The FunFair.

History

The amusement park and accompanying caravan site is based at Unity Farm which was bought by the House Family just after World War II in 1946, and allowed camping on the farm. In the 1970s a golf course was added, which was followed by a swimming pool complex, bars and a bowling alley in the 1990s. The rides and concessions have also been growing gradually since the 1970s and the site attracts over 500,000 people per year.^[1]

In 2006 £1.2million was spent on new rides.^[5]

Attractions

The park has several rides, some of which are described at the Roller Coaster DataBase (RCDB):

• Magic Mouse – a spinning wild mouse ride. It follows the normal spinning style track layout and is one of the park's bigger rides. It was known as "crazy mouse" until the start of the 2007 season.^[6]
• Shockwave – A ride constructed by Italian manufacturer Pinfari that has a loop.^[7] It was originally owned by Pleasure Island Family Theme Park, Cleethorpes, before being sold to Brean.
• Xtreme – the largest and tallest ride at the park.
• XFactory – similar to the traditional Miama Trip ride found within most mobile fun fairs, with the extra added bonus of water jets that shoot water up at the riders when they are in mid-air. The seats tilt downwards so riders get a better view of the water and ground below.
• Wipe Out – the same as Vortex which is located in Thorpe Park. The ride swings riders left and right on the end of a large arm which holds riders in a rotating gondola. It was voted scariest ride at the park by Brainiac.
• Hell Raiser – a traditional matterhorn ride.
• Wild Water
• Caterpillar – another Pinfari ride, which features a standard layout for this model of ride.^[8]
• Terror Castle – ghost train.
• Sizzler – a twister ride.
• Waltzer
• Sky Diver – a freefall ride.
• Astro Storm- indoor coaster in the dark. Formerly at Pleasure Beach Blackpool. Due to open 25th july 2011 (now open).
